No warm up.
Here it is. The worst advice you’ve probably heard:
Unfortunately, that advice is misleading.
Because ‘well-rounded’ is code for average. Being average is boring. And being average won’t get you far.
To be honest, who ‘makes it’ versus who doesn’t is just as much a matter of circumstance as it is a player’s quality. But being properly equipped to stand out during that moment of serendipity is important.
So, here is better advice:
When a coach/scout watches you play, he/she needs to see that you offer something special.
- Beating defenders 1v1
- “Daisy Cutter” passes
- Controlling the ball out of the air like Ronaldinho
- Poaching goals
- Whipping in crosses
- Winning headers like a monster
- Ruthless tackles
Whatever! You choose. Just don’t be suckered into thinking you need to be a well-rounded player. Well-rounded isn’t enough.
And don’t expect to develop these special skills during your team training sessions. That is only one component of player development.
If you really want to make it, you need to go above and beyond and put in the extra work to be better than average.
You need to be different.
You need to be special.
