We’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: a fancy license on a coach’s Instagram bio is rarely a sign of quality — often it’s the opposite.
In this episode we dig deep into credentialism and why so many coaches lean on paper qualifications instead of proven results on the field. We also tackle one of the most common frustrations we see in U.S. youth soccer: coaches spending the majority of team training time on isolated individual technical work instead of building a cohesive team that knows how to play together.
The reality is simple. Soccer is a collective sport. Technique is best developed outside the team environment — against the wall, in pickup games, in the backyard. When clubs turn team sessions into glorified technical circuits, players fall behind their counterparts around the world who are actually learning how to play football.
We break down why this happens (market forces, parent expectations, and coach incompetence all play a role), how much individual work belongs in team training (very little once kids can actually strike a ball), and why possession-based training doesn’t kill creativity — it actually creates more opportunities for players to express themselves.
We also explore the brutal economics of youth coaching: the pressure to win, the need to recruit, why telling parents the truth is dangerous to your paycheck, and how the entire system rewards politicians and schmoozers more than genuine practitioners.
If you’re a parent, coach, or player tired of the fluff and ready for straight talk about what actually develops soccer players, this one is for you.
