Colton Bly is the Director of Coaching for Beaver County United near Pittsburgh, PA.
I’ve been aware of Colton’s work and I’ve trying to get him on the show for quite a while. We finally made it happen.
I spent the majority of this interview asking Colton questions about what it’s been like trying to navigate the traditional USSF coaching education pathways while simultaneously being a 3four3 member. His answers, and experiences, are fascinating.
In this episode, Colton provides some great insight into the world of the newly redesigned USSF coaching courses. He also admits that the training sessions he runs with his actual teams would probably fail to meet USSF’s standards. But his product on the field is what matters most.
Colton talked about the need for coaches to understand that they shouldn’t feel restricted to doing things a certain way. Which is absolutely true. Coaching education is not one size fits all and Colton paints a good picture of how he’s been able to take the best of both worlds to create something of his own.
That’s what coaching is all about. It’s an art. And the best coaches are usually the ones who refuse to color inside of the lines.
Colton is hoping that this episode can serve as an inspiration to younger coaches. Young coaches, like Colton, should start the process of figuring out their vision, dialing in their core exercises, and working on their execution and delivery as soon as possible.
In addition to supporting and funding this podcast, a 3four3 membership actually gets you an education that helps you develop a better vision, refine your exercise library, and gives you video and audio examples of coaches executing in real training sessions and games.
It is the complete online resource that will help you reduce your trial and error time and help you get right to the work that matters. You learn the cutting edge training techniques that have been proven to develop better and smarter players, better and smarter teams, and better and smarter coaches.
