Coaching licenses are often treated as a necessary stamp of legitimacy in American soccer. But what actually happens inside one of these courses? And more importantly, do they make coaches better?

In this episode, we sit down with Paul Spacey, a longtime coach who recently went through the U.S. Soccer C License, to unpack the experience from the inside. Paul walks through the structure of the course, the classroom work, the Zoom sessions, the limited amount of actual coaching time on the field, and the way candidates are expected to frame sessions according to U.S. Soccer’s preferred model.

The conversation quickly moves beyond one license course and into a deeper critique of the coaching education system itself. Is licensing really about education? Or is it a gatekeeping mechanism that rewards compliance with the existing ecosystem?

Gary and Paul dig into the difference between coaching on paper and coaching on grass. They discuss why experienced coaches often operate more by feel, connection, and accumulated judgment than by rigid session templates or pre-planned interventions. That doesn’t mean structure has no value. It means structure is not the same thing as mastery.

The episode also touches on rondos, guided discovery, “age-appropriate” training, the obsession with measurables, and the broader American tendency to over-systematize a sport that ultimately depends on feel, emotion, technique, and human connection.

From there, the discussion widens into the bigger structural problems in U.S. soccer: closed systems, lack of meritocracy, MLS and federation gatekeeping, the youth ecosystem, Tom Byer’s early engagement argument, and the technical debt American players accumulate when they do not start developing properly at very young ages.

This is a blunt conversation, but it is not criticism for the sake of criticism. It is a call for transparency, accountability, and a more serious conversation about how coaches and players actually develop.
