Roster prediction shows are usually bubblegum content. Fun, clickable, and mostly speculative.

But with Pochettino preparing his USMNT World Cup roster, Benny forces Gary into the exercise anyway. Who should go? Who should be left out? Who actually belongs on the field when the World Cup starts?

We go position by position: goalkeepers, center backs, outside backs, midfielders, and forwards. Matt Turner, Matt Freese, Chris Richards, Tim Ream, Antonee Robinson, Sergiño Dest, Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, Gio Reyna, Christian Pulisic, Balogun, Pepi, and the MLS bubble guys all come up.

The Gio Reyna conversation becomes one of the key moments of the episode. Gary argues that even if Reyna has struggled at club level, the USMNT still needs players who can bring something rare. Something different. Something closer to “magic.” The point is not that Reyna is Neymar. The point is that at the international level, when a game needs to be unlocked, pure industry is not enough.

From there, we get into the USMNT’s World Cup group: Paraguay, Australia, and Turkey. On paper, many fans may assume the U.S. should win the group. But the match order, opponent profiles, and expanded tournament format make things far less simple. Australia could be much more dangerous than casual fans expect, especially if they sit deep, stay organized, and force the U.S. to break them down.

The conversation then widens into global context. England can leave out players like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden, or Cole Palmer, while the U.S. fan base debates whether certain MLS players should make the roster. That contrast says a lot about the actual level of the American player pool.

We also touch on World Cup contenders, dark horses, Uruguay, Bielsa, Argentina, Brazil, France, Spain, and the strange “simulation” logic that makes international tournaments so compelling.

Finally, the episode turns toward FIFA ticket prices and the hypocrisy of people who defend MLS monopoly power while complaining about World Cup pricing. Gary’s position is clear: he is not anti-business. He is anti-closed ecosystem. If the market can bear high World Cup prices, that is very different from defending a locked domestic soccer structure that prevents true open competition.

By the end, this becomes more than a roster prediction episode. It is a preview of the narratives that will surround the World Cup in the United States — and why independent voices will be needed to challenge whatever story the establishment tries to sell after the tournament.
