Every parent wants what’s best for their child. But when it comes to youth soccer, good intentions don’t always lead to good decisions. In fact, some of the most common things parents do to help their kids may actually be working against them.
In this episode, we discuss the dos and don’ts of youth soccer parenting, drawing from decades of experience coaching and developing players within the American soccer system.
Before getting into specific advice, we examine the incentives driving American youth soccer. Why does pay-to-play exist? What are clubs actually incentivized to do? And how do those incentives influence the decisions coaches and clubs make regarding your child?
Understanding the system is an important starting point for any parent trying to make informed decisions.
From there, we explore what parents should consider when choosing a club or coach. We discuss why prestigious club badges, coaching licenses, and winning records aren’t necessarily reliable indicators of player development, and why the right environment depends heavily on the individual player and their objectives.
We also address one of the most common problems in youth soccer: parents coaching from the sidelines. There’s an important distinction between passionately supporting your child and giving technical instructions that may directly contradict what the coach is trying to accomplish.
Another major focus is the relationship between parents and coaches. When your child isn’t getting the playing time you expected, or is being played in a different position, how should you respond?
We introduce the 48-hour rule, explain why reacting emotionally after games can damage the relationship with your child’s coach, and discuss how parents can approach difficult conversations with a genuine willingness to learn.
Finally, we reflect on the parents of players who went on to have successful careers, including those who reached the professional level. Their personalities and approaches varied considerably, but one common theme was the trust they placed in the coaches responsible for developing their children.
There’s no universal recipe for raising a successful soccer player. Every child, family, coach, and environment is different.
The objective of this conversation isn’t to criticize parents. It’s to provide perspective from practitioners who have spent decades inside the system, so parents can better recognize the pitfalls, ask better questions, and make more informed decisions throughout their child’s soccer journey.
