Live #11: Pochettino Continues, a New MLS Commissioner, and What it All Means

Mauricio Pochettino has committed to the USMNT through the 2030 World Cup, but the media is already framing his second cycle around trophies, tournament results, and an unrealistic definition of success.

We explain why that framing misses the larger purpose of having a manager with Pochettino’s pedigree. The United States is not suddenly becoming a World Cup contender because of one coach. What Pochettino can do is influence the player pool, challenge the culture surrounding the national team, create opportunities for young players, and use the most powerful microphone in American soccer to introduce ideas the establishment has historically resisted.

That influence becomes especially important when it comes to moving American players overseas. MLS still controls the contracts and career opportunities of many domestic players, but Pochettino’s network, reputation, and willingness to elevate different profiles could create pressure that did not previously exist.

We also discuss the media campaign already forming around his tenure. By defining success as winning every regional trophy and making a deep World Cup run, prominent voices can establish the conditions for another smear campaign if a few results go wrong.

The second half of the episode focuses on MLS’s incoming commissioner. Despite the attention surrounding the appointment, the commissioner is ultimately an employee of the league’s owners. He can manage operations, represent MLS publicly, and sell the owners’ preferred direction, but he cannot independently transform the structure of American soccer.

A different commissioner does not mean a different system.

Finally, we discuss why meaningful change in American soccer will not come from a new commissioner or a single federation decision. It comes from changing public understanding. As more coaches, parents, supporters, media members, and influential figures recognize the incentives driving the current system, the pressure for freedom, opportunity, and merit continues to grow. That, more than any single result on the field, is what will ultimately determine the future of American soccer.
