Live #13: Why Soccer Debates Fail — The Problem With U.S. Soccer’s Talking Points

Debates sound like a good way to get closer to the truth. In practice, they often do the opposite.

They reward quick talking points, encourage people to defend positions they already hold, and leave almost no room for the kind of depth required to understand a complicated ecosystem like American soccer.

That problem becomes especially obvious when discussing the structure of the game in the United States.

In this episode, we revisit several familiar arguments used to defend the status quo: America supposedly lacks the soccer culture necessary for an open system, only a limited number of markets can support professional clubs, promotion and relegation would discourage investment, and the growing number of Americans playing in Europe proves our development system is getting substantially better.

We unpack why those conclusions deserve considerably more scrutiny.

One important distinction is between better players and greater opportunity for players. Global scouting, video platforms, international connectivity, the success of players such as Christian Pulisic, and the wave of young Americans who rejected domestic pathways for opportunities abroad all changed the landscape. More Americans reaching Europe does not automatically tell us why they got there or whether the domestic development system deserves the credit.

That leads into the larger issue: incentives.

An open ecosystem gives clubs, investors, players, coaches, and communities something meaningful to build toward. A second-division club can invest knowing that sporting success can unlock a higher level of competition and economic opportunity. Remove that possibility and the incentive structure changes dramatically.

Mexico now provides an important case study. After suspending promotion and relegation in 2020, the effects described in the episode include falling second-division attendance, declining squad values, pressure on player salaries, and weaker incentives for club investment.

The same principle applies in the United States.

The precise number of teams, conferences, stadium requirements, or regional structures can all be debated. Those are implementation questions. The more fundamental question is whether American soccer should provide freedom, opportunity, and meritocracy throughout its professional ecosystem.

That is the debate worth having.
