What happens to a soccer culture when losing has no real consequences?
Mauricio Pochettino’s answer is pretty clear: you learn how to lose.
In his conversation with Chad Ochocinco, Pochettino pointed directly to the lack of promotion and relegation in MLS. Teams can finish at the bottom of the table and simply start preparing for next season. There’s no relegation and no real consequence for finishing last.
That’s very different from most of the soccer world. Finish at the bottom and you can be relegated. Clubs lose money and prestige. Players and coaches can lose their jobs. Every game matters because there’s something real on the line.
Pochettino believes that difference affects the mentality of American players. We get into why his comments matter, what they say about the structure of American soccer, and why the American soccer media has been much quicker to highlight his praise of MLS coaches.
We also break down the USMNT’s 4-1 win over Peru and what we’re starting to see from Pochettino’s team. The pressing was aggressive, the energy was high, and the players treated the game like it mattered.
Then there’s Cavan Sullivan. Gary gives his first impressions of Sullivan with the national team, what he liked, what he still wants to see, and why everyone needs to relax a little with the hype surrounding a 17-year-old.
We compare Sullivan with Mexico’s Gilberto Mora and look at their different qualities, development, and upbringing. That conversation also takes us back to Efrain Alvarez and how much a player’s environment, opportunities, and coaches can affect where their career goes.
We also get into Gio Reyna. His quality on the ball is obvious, but his defensive work raises questions when playing in a Pochettino team that wants to press relentlessly.
Finally, we answer a question from a parent who understands the problems with American soccer but still has to navigate the system with their kid. What can you actually do?
You may have to play within the system that exists. But you don’t have to be blind to what it is.
