Harry Kane has won the Ballon d’Or, USL is moving forward with promotion and relegation, and the structural problems facing American soccer remain largely unchanged.
We open with Kane’s remarkable season and the debate over whether he deserves to be considered the best player in the world. His goal-scoring numbers are extraordinary, but numbers alone don’t tell the whole story. Gary examines the qualities that separate Kane from players like Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal, particularly his intelligence, versatility, and ability to influence a match beyond scoring goals.
From there, we turn to USL’s latest announcement regarding promotion and relegation. It’s being celebrated by many as a historic step forward for American soccer. But there’s an important distinction being overlooked.
Promotion and relegation within a closed league structure is not the same as an open soccer ecosystem.
Under USL’s proposed model, clubs still cannot simply start at the bottom and earn their way into the professional pyramid through sporting merit. Entry remains controlled by the league. Gary explains why that distinction matters, how an open ecosystem functions elsewhere in the world, and why genuine competition between independent clubs is fundamental to the sport’s development.
We also explore Jermaine Jones’ recent comments questioning how American soccer evaluates players like Landon Donovan. Jones argues that competing at the highest levels in Europe should carry greater weight when discussing the greatest American players. His comments raise broader questions about the influence of MLS, the American soccer establishment, and who gets recognized for their accomplishments.
The conversation then shifts to college soccer, where Missouri State reportedly has 26 international players and just one American on its roster. What does that say about the quality of American player development? And what incentives are driving college coaches to recruit so heavily from overseas?
Finally, we examine the latest U.S. U15 boys national team roster, which features players almost exclusively from MLS academies. Gary discusses the consequences of concentrating opportunities within a small number of professional academies and the talented players who may never receive an opportunity to prove themselves.
These stories may appear unrelated, but they point toward the same underlying issue: the structure of American soccer, the incentives it creates, and the consequences for clubs, coaches, and players.
Until those incentives change, the problems will persist.
