Everybody in American soccer loves to say we don’t have the right soccer culture.
But what happens when someone like Mauricio Pochettino actually brings a higher-level soccer culture into the room?
That’s where this episode begins.
The backlash against Pochettino — over emails, roster decisions, media comments, job rumors, and even who he names captain — is not really about those individual incidents. It is about a deeper cultural conflict inside American soccer.
We discuss the leaked USMNT roster, who may have benefited from it, and why the way the roster was handled says so much about the bureaucratic nature of U.S. Soccer.
From there, we get into the controversy over Pochettino informing players by email that they were not selected. To many in the American soccer media and fan base, this was treated as some kind of moral failure. But in serious football environments, grown professional players are expected to handle hard decisions like professionals.
That contrast matters.
We also examine Diego Luna’s exclusion from the roster, and why his case reveals how MLS and U.S. Soccer use marketing, optics, and narrative-building to shape public perception. Luna became a symbol before he became a World Cup-level player, and that tension finally collided with a manager who appears willing to make sporting decisions on his own terms.
The episode also goes deeper into MLS’s influence over U.S. Soccer, the fan base’s tendency to swing wildly from one result to the next, and the predictable push to frame foreign managers as outsiders who “don’t understand” the American player.
That framing is not accidental.
Pochettino represents a threat precisely because he does not need MLS. He does not need the American soccer establishment to validate his career. And that makes him harder to control.
We close by talking about what the 2026 World Cup may or may not change, why one tournament will not magically fix the American system, and why the longer fight is still about freedom, opportunity, and meritocracy in the game.
